Have you ever heard the saying, "you can't make something out of nothing?" The same is true for the practice of personal injury law. Just because someone hangs up a sign or runs an advertisement and says they are a lawyer does not mean they are a good one.
When it comes to defending your rights after an accident, your choice of law firm will make the difference between a great result and one that is not what you had expected. And as you probably know, not all law firms are created equal when it comes to talent and training, despite all the money they spend trying to prove otherwise on TV commercials. So, how do you choose what is best for you and your family when a bunch of law firms are making claims attempting to get your business?
How Do You Choose the Right Law Firm for Your Case?
Call each firm you are considering hiring and give them the three-question test:
Question 1: Are most or all your attorneys board certified?
Board-certified attorneys have met the objective and rigorous standards approved by the American Bar Association and numerous state accreditation agencies. Additionally, they have passed a challenging board certification examination. You want a firm with several board-certified attorneys.
Question 2: Are any or all of them members of the American College of Trial Lawyers?
Why the American College? The American College is recognized as the preeminent organization of trial lawyers in North America dedicated to maintaining and improving trial practice standards, professionalism, and ethics in law.
After careful investigation, fellowship is extended only by invitation to those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility, and collegiality.
Although there are currently more than 5,800 Fellows across the U.S. and Canada, membership can never exceed more than 1% of the total lawyer population of any state or province. Once again, you want to find a law firm with several attorneys who are members.
Question 3: Have your attorneys been named Lawyer of the Year by the rating service Best Lawyers in at least 8 of the last 10 years?
In the Hartford, CT region, only the law firm of RisCassi & Davis, P.C. can answer yes to this question and the others above.
Be Wary of Claims About Attorney Fees
And one more thing: be aware of claims about attorney fees. Some attorneys in Connecticut claim they have what they call a special "zero fee guarantee." We want to be clear about this fact, no injury law firm in Connecticut charges a fee unless they win. Not one.
